Caffeinated Notes is now available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is a rich text notes app built for people who want to write, search, and sync without learning markdown or trusting their data to someone else’s cloud.
No ads. No tracking. No account required.
Why It Exists
I wanted notes that sync, search instantly, and don’t require me to learn markdown. After years of fighting Synology Notestation’s authentication issues and Joplin’s Electron desktop, I built something that works the way I think.
For the full story, read the post on my personal blog.
What It Does
- Rich text editing with formatting toolbar, tables with cell-level styling, and embedded images. No markdown syntax required, but paste markdown and it converts automatically
- Instant full-text search across all notes
- Web clipper on mobile: share a URL and Notes fetches the page content automatically
- Notebooks for simple organization, with optional sharing through a multi-user subscription
- Built-in tasks: insert a checkbox list into any note and it becomes a to-do list with its own dedicated screen. Bidirectional: check it off in either place
- Import from Joplin (.jex) and Synology Notestation (.nsx), plus export to Markdown, HTML, or PDF
- Version history so you can go back to any previous state
Mobile and Desktop
The mobile app is clean, fast, with a built-in web clipper and home screen widget on Android.
The desktop app is a native application, not a mobile app in a wrapper. Pop individual notes out into their own windows. Use Ctrl+\ to hide everything except the editor. It is the digital equivalent of having a steno pad open next to your keyboard.
Built with Privacy in Mind
- Offline-first: your notes live on your device
- No analytics, no ads
- Encrypted local database
Sync across devices is available through a Caffeinated Account subscription, but the app is fully functional on a single device without one.
